The Vertical Academy Model
One Program. One Standard. Every Level.
Whether a player is in 2nd grade or 10th, they enter the same high-frequency training environment. The curriculum is consistent — the application is skill-specific. Players are grouped by current ability, not just age, ensuring they are always challenged but never overwhelmed. The environment scales up with them. The standard never scales down.
Same Infrastructure
Every player 2nd–10th has access to the same 5-day training week, the same coaching staff culture, and the same development philosophy.
Skill-Specific Application
Monday and Wednesday lab sessions group players by current ability — not age. A skilled 5th grader may work alongside 7th graders. That's intentional.
Vertical Pathway
A player who joins at 2nd grade and stays through 10th doesn't switch programs — they graduate through the same system, year over year.
The 5-Day Training Week
The weekly schedule is the backbone of the Vertical Academy. Each day has a distinct purpose — no filler sessions, no rolling the ball out. Coaches must understand and communicate why each day exists.
Mon
Skills Lab
Ability Groups
High-repetition fundamentals. Players are grouped by current skill level, not age. Coaches sort groups within the first 5 minutes.
Tue
Team Practice
Roster Chemistry
Focus on team chemistry and tactical execution with their specific tournament roster.
Wed
Shooting Lab
Volume Mechanics
Dedicated shooting mechanics session. Repetition, form, and range. Ability-grouped like Monday.
Thu
Team Practice
Game Prep
Second team practice of the week. Refine game plan and rotations ahead of weekend tournament.
Fri
IQ Games
Small-Sided Play
2v2 to 4v4 live games. Tests Basketball IQ against players of similar skill levels. Primary source for monthly Clip of the Month.
Coach Requirement — Monday & Wednesday
Coaches must actively sort players into skill-appropriate groups within the first 5 minutes of every Monday and Wednesday lab session. This is not optional — ability grouping is the mechanism that makes the Vertical Academy work. If a parent questions a grouping decision, apply the 24-hour rule and explain that groups are data-driven based on lab performance.
Tournament Placement Philosophy
Teams are entered into brackets based on competitive readiness, not age or registration order. The goal is balance — enough success to build confidence, enough challenge to force growth.
Elite
Highest bracket
Reserved for teams demonstrating consistent tactical execution and competitive readiness. Playing up means the stakes are real.
Open
Mid bracket
The most common placement. Competitive games with teams at a similar development stage. Best environment for applying new concepts.
Developmental
Entry bracket
For teams still building fundamentals. Winning here builds confidence — the fuel that keeps younger players coming back.
Why We Don't Guarantee a Bracket
Bracket placement is reassessed each tournament based on the team's most recent Friday IQ Game data and current-season results. Parents should understand: moving up a bracket is a recognition of growth, not a punishment. Coaches should frame it exactly that way — "We are playing up this weekend because the boys have earned it."
The "Lab Access" Pitch
For families associated with the program but not currently on a tournament roster this season. Lab Access is the bridge that keeps them in the building until they're ready to re-commit.
The Concept
No Roster? No Problem.
Even if a player is not on an SF Champions tournament roster this season, they can still access our Developmental Labs (Mon/Wed/Fri sessions). They stay in the environment, stay around our coaches, and stay sharp.
The Newsletter Amplifies It
Use the monthly Lab Report to highlight players who attend all 5 days. Former families see their peers making gains — that's the FOMO engine in action.
The Goal
Keep the door open. Lab Access means there's always a next step short of full re-enrollment — a lower-commitment re-entry point that prevents permanent departure.
The Pitch — Copy/Paste Ready
"Coach Vic's Lab is open. While other programs just play games, we build players.
Even if [Player Name] isn't on a tournament roster this season, he can still access our Developmental Labs — Shooting on Wednesday, IQ Games on Friday.
Come stay sharp. Come stay connected. The roster will always be here when he's ready."
In the Monthly Newsletter
Include a standing "Lab Report" callout in every newsletter highlighting attendance or a standout moment from a Friday IQ Game. Former families see active players improving week over week — and they see the door is still open for them.

The SF Champions "Level-Up" Training Model
Every player in our program — from 2nd to 10th grade — has access to the same elite training schedule. While the curriculum is consistent, the application is skill-specific. Players are grouped by current ability, not just age, so they are always challenged at the right level.
Monday — Skills Lab: High-repetition fundamentals in ability-based groups.
Tuesday — Team Practice: Team chemistry and tactical execution with your tournament roster.
Wednesday — Shooting Lab: Volume shooting mechanics.
Thursday — Team Practice: Game preparation and rotation refinement.
Friday — IQ Games: 2v2 to 4v4 small-sided games against players of similar skill. This is where Basketball IQ gets tested in real time.
Tournament Placement
We do not believe in participation trophies. Teams are entered into Elite, Open, or Developmental brackets based on their current competitive readiness — ensuring every player experiences the right balance of success and growth. Moving up a bracket means your team has earned it.
The Lab is Always Open
Even during "off" seasons or roster transitions, players can access our Mon/Wed/Fri Developmental Labs. Once part of the SF Champions family, the door is always open.
